Q. Tell us about Bold Web Design. How did the company come to be?
Sam Jean Marc started Bold Web Design in 2008 after having worked for some of Australia’s top agencies.
The main focus of the business is to provide our clients with outstanding UI and to implement world class design styles to Australian businesses.
Q. What is the complete process of making a website for a client? Can you give us an overview?
Before we begin to design a clients website, we first do a great deal of research. This includes in-house focus groups or online surveys. This information then provides us with the information we need, such as any customer objections and what is the most appealing proposition.
The second stage of our development is the wire framing. We may try several different styles until we produce something that best reflects the research.
Once we are happy with the wire framing, we then begin the design of the website. This will include collating visual graphics, such as photos, video, illustrations and typography. During this process we will experiment with many different options until we are happy that it best conveys the brands feel.
Q. What 5 factors of web design should tech startups keep in mind when designing their website?
- The most important factor is to use clear, strong headlines to convey your point to the user. There’s nothing wrong with using up to 15 words.
- Discover what the top 6 objections are that your sceptics have towards your products or services and find a way to disprove it.
- Try not to use stock photography, as it cheapens the brand. Always display your products by using videos or animated gifs.
- Stay away from too many colours, as this will make your website look messy. It’s best to only use two fonts, and two colours. Always use the more eye catching colour to be your call to action as this will draw your customer attention.
- Call to action buttons are crucial for converting your customers, so it’s best to locate them at each section of your website. By doing this you provide the customer with the best opportunity to purchase.
Q. How can tech businesses who already have websites, fix bad user experience on their website?
What causes majority of website to have bad UI is they fill their pages with unnecessary copy or filler text.
It’s important to remember that most people do not have the time to sit there reading a whole bunch of text, and will only continue to view a website if they are drawn in by clear headlines.
Break up the page into clear sections and have a call to action button in each, because it’s very frustrating for a customer who wants to purchase or sign up but can’t find where.
Q. How important is font selection and typography for tech websites? What is the art of picking the perfect font?
The font style of a website will drastically change it’s appearance, so it’s crucial that it’s done correctly. With many different font tools available it’s become easier to make sure that you select the right font style. One important point to remember is to use serif with san serif, or a bold text with thin.
